We get lots of entertainment adventuring in permaculture here on our farm.
Our nomadic friends, Mike and Lori were instrumental in helping us design and build our 300′ x 6′ x 5′ Hugelculture.
Hugelculture is German for hill culture and is a gardening technique pioneered in Germany hundreds of years ago. It involves digging a trench then filling it with logs, sticks, wood chips, manure, cardboard – even old clothes – back filling, then planting like crazy.
The idea is that as the material breaks down underneath, it is creating nutrients for the roots of the plants above. I believe it will act as a water sink as well, attracting nearby moisture underground.
